Is Divorce Okay for Christians? Understanding God's Will for Your Marriage

Welcome!

I’m Amanda Nicole, Founder of Freedom Through Divorce, and I’m here to walk alongside women of faith navigating the complex and often painful journey of divorce. Through personal development courses, eBooks, and resources, I help women like you find clarity, healing, and God’s purpose after a toxic marriage.

When I was trapped in my own toxic marriage, one question kept me stuck and paralyzed with fear: Is divorce okay for Christians? It felt impossible to find the right answer. Everything I came across either condemned me, making me feel guilty and ashamed for even considering divorce, or dismissed the issue entirely, taking a superficial approach that didn’t honor my faith.

Worse yet, these answers rarely came from someone who truly understood what it’s like to wrestle with the weight of that decision while walking with God. That’s why I’m sharing the truth God revealed to me—truth that provided the clarity, freedom, and peace I needed to move forward.

Today, I want to teach you what I learned so you can find the answers you’re seeking and walk boldly in alignment with God’s will for your life. Let’s dive in together.

Two Types of Marriages in Scripture

One of the foundational truths that isn't often taught in churches is that there are two different kinds of marriages mentioned in the Bible:

  1. God-Ordained Marriages: These are unions that God Himself brings together. He is the author and the officiant of these marriages. They are part of His divine plan and purpose for both individuals involved. These marriages reflect God's covenant with His people and embody the principles and promises laid out in Scripture.

  2. Marriages Outside of God's Will: Unfortunately, not all marriages fall into the first category. The enemy seeks to pervert what God has created, and marriage is no exception. Some marriages are entered into without seeking God's guidance or are influenced by factors contrary to His will. These unions can often be toxic, abusive, and draining.

Recognizing a God-Ordained Marriage

In a God-ordained marriage:

  • Divine Purpose: Both individuals are brought together for a purpose that aligns with God's plan.

  • Spiritual Growth: The relationship fosters spiritual maturity and draws both partners closer to God.

  • Biblical Reflection: The marriage reflects Christ's relationship with the Church, embodying love, sacrifice, and mutual respect.

  • God's Support: God has a vested interest in protecting and nurturing the marriage. He provides guidance and strength to overcome challenges.

When Divorce Becomes Acceptable

If you find yourself in a marriage that is not God-ordained:

  • Toxic and Abusive Relationships: These marriages may involve physical, emotional, verbal, or even sexual abuse.

  • Lack of Peace and Growth: Instead of fostering spiritual growth, the relationship hinders your walk with God.

  • Ineffective Biblical Principles: Applying biblical principles doesn't improve the situation because the foundation isn't rooted in God's will.

In such cases, divorce isn't just acceptable—it may be necessary to step back into alignment with God's purpose for your life. Continuing in a marriage that God did not sanction means remaining outside of His will, which can prevent you from experiencing the fullness of His blessings.

The Challenge of Letting Go

I understand that this is a hard pill to swallow. It was for me too. Realizing that you may need to leave your marriage to return to God's will is a profound and often painful revelation. However, it's essential to remember that God's desire is for you to live a life that reflects His love, peace, and purpose.

Determining God's Will for Your Marriage

So, how do you know which category your marriage falls into?

  1. Seek God's Voice: The most crucial step is to learn how to hear God's voice for yourself. This isn't just about your marriage but every aspect of your life.

  2. Deepen Your Relationship with God:

    • Read Scripture: Familiarize yourself with God's character and how He communicates.

    • Prayer: Spend time in prayer, asking God for clarity and understanding.

    • Holy Spirit Guidance: Be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit, who speaks to your spirit and provides wisdom.

  3. Self-Reflection: Consider whether your marriage aligns with the principles of a God-ordained union.

  4. Peace in Decision-Making: When you hear from God, there will be a peace that surpasses understanding, even if the path ahead is challenging.

Moving Forward in Faith

Making the decision to divorce is never easy, especially when children are involved. However, when you are confident that you are following God's guidance, you can move forward without guilt or condemnation.

Remember:

  • God Speaks Today: He continues to communicate with His children in multiple ways. Don't believe the misconception that God doesn't speak outside of Scripture. He doesn't speak contrary to it, but if the rocks can cry out, and a donkey can speak, He can speak using anything including scripture!

  • Alignment with Scripture: While God may speak to you personally, His guidance will never contradict the Bible.

  • Community Support: Seek counsel from trusted, spiritually mature individuals who can provide support and wisdom.
