From Crisis to Calling: My Journey to God’s Purpose

This is my story—how I went from a life of toxic marriage, struggle, and discontentment, to walking in alignment with God’s plan; and the role divorce played in my journey. My journey is one of breaking free, finding hope, and trusting God through every step.

Autopilot Living: A Life Without Direction

At one point, my life felt like it was running on autopilot. I was in a bad marriage, stuck in a frustrating job, and involved in a church that wasn’t feeding my spirit.

It was during this time that something stirred in me. I knew deep down that this wasn’t God’s plan for my life. I was always a go-getter—someone who faced challenges head-on and overcame obstacles quickly. But this time, I was stuck. No matter what I tried, nothing worked. Every path seemed blocked, and my efforts were fruitless.

I was working three jobs and running a business, yet we were barely getting by. As a leader in my church, overseeing multiple ministries, I felt empty and unfulfilled. Despite my efforts, I wasn’t living out my calling or walking in God’s purpose. The biggest obstacle in my life was my marriage—a relationship that was draining me emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

A Dream That Changed Everything

One night, I sought God for answers. I was desperate for clarity and direction. As I fell asleep, I had a dream that would alter the course of my life.

In my dream, I saw myself on my wedding day. The scene replayed just as it had years earlier—standing at the altar, holding my husband’s hands, and repeating our vows after the preacher. But then something extraordinary happened.

A bright light appeared behind the preacher, and a massive white figure, towering like a thousand-foot man, bent down and whispered into my ear. I froze, overwhelmed by the presence of God. Initially, I felt like a child awaiting punishment, but as His presence surrounded me, I was filled with peace and love.

He said, “My daughter, I love you, but I do not approve of this union.”

I woke up startled. That moment forced me to take inventory of my life, evaluate where I was, and recognize why I was stuck. I realized that my marriage was not ordained by God.

Understanding God’s Design for Marriage

Through that dream, God revealed to me that there are two types of marriages in scripture:

  1. Marriages Ordained by God: These reflect God’s heart and purpose. In such marriages, He has a vested interest in protecting, fortifying, and guiding the relationship.

  2. Marriages Outside of God’s Will: These are unions not orchestrated by God but instead influenced by our choices or even the enemy. These marriages are often toxic, abusive, and draining, and no amount of applying biblical principles can fix what God did not join together.

I was in the latter type of marriage. It wasn’t just draining my life—it was stealing my dreams, my drive, and even my health. God showed me that remaining in a union He didn’t ordain was keeping me from the life and blessings He intended for me.

Breaking Free and Finding Purpose

That revelation set me on a journey to align my life with God’s will. I had to take steps to:

  • Get Unstuck: Identify the hindrances blocking my progress.

  • Seek God’s Guidance: Trust His plan and timing for my life.

  • Walk in Obedience: Remove myself from situations that weren’t aligned with His will.

Leaving my marriage wasn’t easy, but it was necessary for me to step into the purpose God had for me. Today, I am living proof that God can redeem even the hardest seasons and use them for His glory.
